Skylanders Cloud Patrol App Review for iPhone/iPod/iPad

Skylanders fans will rejoice today as Activision released its first Skylanders game today for iOS devices.   Skylanders Cloud Patrol is a Arcade Gallery Shooter/Fruit Ninja-style slash game.

Trolls are the main enemies in this game as they escaped a troll prison.  It's your job as a Skylander to eliminate as many escaped trolls as you can before dying.  There are bonus levels that have you shoot evil sheep (Running joke from the console game) and if you get all of them, you get a huge score bonus.

In addition to the regular baddies,  you'll want to pop the balloons floating around for extra points and pop magical items that appear on-screen.
Once you pop a magical item you can tap it to unlock it's magic for as long as it lasts.

Using the "Ghost Swords" triggers a 25X multiplier and gives you swinging swords when you tap on the screen, instead of the normal cannon blasts.

Tapping on an enemy will shoot them as individuals and you don't get much of a score.  However, if you tap on one enemy then slide you finger across other enemies than you get a chain and the last enemy will spawn a big coin with the number on it.  Tap on that big coin to get major coinage.  Also tap on little coins throughout the levels to gather coins.

If you own a Skylander figure, you can import him/her into the game via Web came.  Even if you don't have any of the figures, you start off with Trigger Happy and you can buy as many Skylanders as you want in-game for 40 gems.  Gems are earned randomly after every game ends and you are rewarded five gems each time you level up. Similarly, you can unlock Magical items by redeeming web codes from your figures or by redeeming gems in-game. Coins earned in the game can be used to upgrade Magical Items.  If a player wants to bypass earning coins or gems, they can buy various quantities of these via in-app purchases.

Though this is not the console version of Skylanders, it is a good representation of the franchise and still is interactive with the figures. Even though it's not the way most Skylanders fans are used to.  Hopefully this is an indication that Activision will be adding Skylanders: Giants to the Appstore around same time of the launch of the console versions of the game.

Overall this is a fun and addictive game that has a lot of replay value and I give it 5 stars and recommend it to all ages.
